The brand dates back to 1837, when Thierry Hermes opened his own workshop in France, where he made horse harnesses, horse saddles and ammunition for riders, and soon clothing and golf accessories. When the son of the founder - Charles-Emile Hermes "got into the saddle" he moved the workshop to one of the central streets of Paris, where the main office of the company is now located.

For over 180 years, Hermes has been handcrafting all of its products by specially trained craftsmen in the company's ateliers called "Ateliers Hermes". An interesting fact: the company controls that the same master makes the product from the beginning to the end of the process. Each person who joins the atelier must undergo a 3-year training program, which undoubtedly makes the newcomer a true master of his craft and also signals the brand's commitment to its traditions.

How has Hermes earned its global recognition?

The brand has gone through a very long history to become what it is today. Hermes has been handed down from generation to generation, along with traditional craft techniques, maintaining impeccable quality through the ages.

It all started in 1880 when a small family workshop began producing riding accessories, which were soon sold in stores.

In the late 1890s, the brand was taken over by the founder's son Charles-Emile Hermès, who in 1900 invented the first model of rider's bag called "Haut à Courroies". It became a kind of breakthrough in the Hermes family industry and opened new opportunities for the development of the brand. After this model, the production of travel and riding bags made of high quality materials continued for a decade.

The fame of the brand did not only conquer the European regions, but also reached other continents such as America and Africa. Around the same years Hermes introduced zippers into its products, making the bags incredibly easy to fasten and more practical. Among people, these zippers have been given the unspoken name "Hermes zippers."

1920s. This is the time that radically changed the direction of the brand: Maurice Hermès, the wife of Emile, who ran the company at the time, needed a handbag for her own use, but could not find one. As a consequence, her husband designed a smaller version of the popular "Haut à Courroies" model especially for her, thus enriching the Hermes catalog.

A few years later a new Hermes collection appeared, the Kelly bag, named after the actress Kelly Grace, and in December 1937 the Hermes Carres scarves were introduced.

An unexpected update awaited the brand's connoisseurs in 1949, when, along with a familiar accessory such as a tie, the company launched a perfume called Eau d'Hermès.

In the mid-1970s, the company decided to try another innovation in production - Hermès set up a watchmaking workshop in Switzerland and bought out a couple of tableware companies, gaining a foothold in this segment of the luxury market.

Another "handbag breakthrough" awaited the company in 1982 - the appearance of the Birkin bag, which became world-famous and whose price can reach 300,000 dollars and even more. The most interesting thing is that the idea was created through a casual conversation between actress Jane Birkin and the then head of the company Jean-Louis Dumas, during which it was proposed to create a bag for the star to order. Now a Birkin bag is not only a luxurious attribute of the closet, but also a great investment, because every year their price is rapidly increasing.

In 1976, the Hermes brand began collaborating with a British luxury shoe brand, which allowed it to add exquisite footwear models to its range.
