About the Balmain brand
Balmain is one of the most prestigious contemporary French fashion brands. Its complicated history began with a boutique opened in Paris in 1945, just after the end of the Second World War.
The founder and inspiration behind the luxury brand is designer Pierre Balmain, who has been called "the couturier of queens" for his taste for luxurious style. Since 2011, Balmain has been headed by Olivier Rousteing, a talented fashion designer who has brought the legendary brand back to the top of the fashion Olympus.
In 2016, French fashion house Balmain was taken over by Qatari investment fund Mayhoola for Investments. The Balmain brand is headquartered in Paris, with production sites in Italy, Bulgaria, Japan, China and Poland in addition to France. The brand's signature products are not only available in monobrand stores in Paris, New York, London, Las Vegas and Milan: at any time you can buy real luxury Balmain clothes online at the Domino online store.
The Balmain range and DNA
The iconic French haute couture house offers:
- a wide selection of clothing and footwear for women, men and children;
- original accessories, including hats, glasses, bags and watches (the exclusive rights to Balmain TM watches belong to the Swiss company Swatch Group);
- hair products (shampoos, curlers, hairpins, etc.).
Modern women's collections of Balmain clothes are characterized by original cut and unusual finishes. Although the models are based on traditional silhouettes, the finished products always look fresh and bold, and sometimes extravagant. The assortment of the fashionable Parisian house is endlessly diverse: dresses, sundresses, suits, cardigans, coats, trench coats, raincoats and jackets, actual knitwear and denim, jeans, T-shirts, tunics, turtlenecks and sweatshirts. Balmain men's closet looks more restrained, but no less bright.
The clothes of this fashion house always have a haute couture feel, just as Pierre Balmain intended. With the arrival of Olivier Rousteing, Balmain's new collections have become even more glamorous, as the designer is not indifferent to sparkling decoration. Recognize the brand's products by:
- complex textures;
- expressed silhouette lines;
- hand finishing;
- abundant accessories and decoration (luxurious embroidery, embossed sewing, decorative elements).
Balmain: the history of ups and downs
Pierre Balmain, couturier of international renown, was born in 1914. His fate was somewhat predetermined, as his parents were directly involved in fashion: his father owned a clothing manufactory and his mother a fashion boutique. In the early 1930s Balmain, who inherited the family business, studied architecture at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts and in parallel drew sketches for fashion designer Robert Piguet. Pierre's talents did not go unnoticed - in 1936, he was invited by the famous Parisian fashion designer Edward Molinet, who is believed to have had the greatest influence on the future meter of world fashion.
In 1939, fate brought Pierre Balmain together with another famous Parisian couturier and industrialist, Lucien Lelong, in whose workshop he worked alongside Christian Dior.
At the age of 31 (1945), Balmain decided to set sail, opening his eponymous fashion house and creating the first Pierre Balmain collection. The young designer's calling card was elegant feminine silhouettes, which Parisians missed during the war. Bell skirts with narrow corseted waists captivated fashionistas, and the Balmain atelier quickly gained momentum.
Balmain is a brand that does more than just clothes: in 1946, the first perfume by Pierre Balmain was launched (Elysees 64-83), and in 1949 the brand released one of its most successful compositions, the Jolie Madame fragrance, after which it later created an equally famous collection.
The designers who have had a hand in the development of the brand include Eric Mortensen and the legendary Karl Lagerfeld, who worked as Balmain's assistant for nine years. The fashion house has been used by movie studios, movie stars (Vivien Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Ava Gardner, Audrey Hepburn) and royalty who have appreciated the elegant French garments.
Balman has collections for the Olympic Games (1968) and flight attendants.
In the 1980s, when laconic clothes were at their peak, Balmain's feminine collections, including its famous embroidered dresses, lost their relevance and the brand suffered a decline and oblivion.
The iconic fashion designer died in 1982, and the fashion house has gone from strength to strength, through ups and downs. At different times, the house was headed by Erton Mortensen (1982-1990), Oscar de la Renta (1993-2002), after whose departure the brand stopped participating in haute couture shows, and Christophe Decarnin (2006).
It wasn't until 2018 that Balmain's brainchild returned to the world of haute couture thanks to the ambitious Olivier Rousteing, who took over as director emeritus in 2011 and unveiled a new logo and a new Balmain couture collection.
The fashion house has opened new lines:
- in 2015 there was a successful collaboration between Balmain and the Swedish brand H&M;
- in 2016, the brand collaborated with sports brand Nike Lab;
- in 2017 Balmain presented a signature lipstick collection together with L'Oreal, and with Victoria's Secret created a capsule lingerie collection.
Olivier Rousteing is not afraid of new design, marketing and communication solutions. Thanks to this, Balmain is once again a star brand, as it was under its founder, whose outfits can be seen on Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and other celebrities. Having been to the shows of the brand and having looked in Balmain catalog, later you can see these clothes in music videos and movies, at elite parties and red carpets.
